The Yarn Shop offers a range of classes and private lessons for fiber artists of virtually every skill level. Just getting started or need some special help? Try one of our Workshop classes. Looking for something new? Consider a project class. Or try out a skill before you invest in equipment. Most two-hour classes are $15 per person. Want a class you don't see listed? We're glad to schedule a private lesson at $15 per half-hour. Call us at 704-889-1308 or drop us a line for more info or to reserve your space in the date of your choice.

Free Technique Demos
The Yarn Shop offers free demonstrations from 10:30-11:00am on Saturdays. In August, join us for Tunisian Crochet lessons. Considered to be a cross between knitting and crochet, this technique creates a denser fabric with many applications. Stay tuned for future months' features!
The Basics
Knitting Workshops
   Wednesdays from 10a-noon
   Thursdays from 7-9pm
   Saturdays from 2-4pm

These inclusive sessions offer an answer for every question. Want to learn to knit? Need help with a new technique? Having trouble with a garment you have underway? At the Workshop, you'll enjoy personal assistance in a small group setting that includes people of every skill level.

Novice & new knitters can learn...

Advanced beginners can learn...
• the purl stitch - the other essential knitting stitch
• determining gauge for a just-right fit
• easy techniques to enhance your knitting repertoire

Intermediate
Now-intermediate knitters can learn more complicated skills, including cables, intarsia, entrelac, and Fair Isle.


Crochet Workshops
   Tuesdays from 5-7pm
Learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read crochet patterns. Everyone from beginners to the experienced crocheters are welcome — we tailor our instructions to your individual needs.
The Next Step
ONE-SKEIN PROJECTS

Quickly go from start to finish! Learn a new skill and get ready for the holidays with these project-based class. Choose from felted bottle cozies, an easy hat, and fingerless gloves (requires two sessions), cell phone cozy, a teddy bear, or an evening bag or clutch.

YOUR FIRST SWEATER!
   Call for schedule
Choose a classic style from several of our favorite patterns and start making your first real garment. Learn to read your pattern, choose your yarn, and calculate your gauge. When you're done with the knitting, you'll learn the essential techniques of seaming and blocking.

SOCKS
   Call for schedule
Some knitters love sock knitting for its mobility; others love it for its meditative quality. And friends and family love it for the handknitted gifts they can wear. In this two-session class for advanced beginners, knitters choose to learn using either double pointed needles or two circular needles. $20

2 SOCKS ON 2 CIRCULARS
   Saturday, August 2 from 10:00am to noon
   Saturday, August 23 from 10:00am to noon
If you suffer from second sock syndrome, this is the class for you. Never have only one sock again and impress your friends when you master knitting both socks at once with two circular needles. $20

   Saturday, August 30 from 10:00am to noon
Also called afghan crochet, this technique utilizes a smooth crochet hook with a cable to create a unique fabric with many applications. The class will cover lace Tunisian crochet stitches found in the La Mer Scarf from the Summer 2008 issue of Interweave Crochet. $15 plus materials

ENTRELAC

Intermediate knitters learn how to make a gorgeous scarf, shawl, or bag using this intricate pattern style of knitting.

Spinning & Weaving
Spinning 101
   Saturday, August 9 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
A craft as old as humankind, spinning is well-loved for its creative and its meditative qualities. Learn about the history of spinning, natural fibers, and the operation of a spinning wheel. All participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at our Ashford Traveller wheel. $25

Wool Preparation Class
   Call for schedule
Experience how raw, unwashed wool is cleaned, carded and prepared for spinning.
$25 (includes wool)

knitters loom
   Second Saturday from 10:00am to noon
   Fourth Tuesday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm
No knitting skills required! This great little lap loom offers an alternative way to use all those great yarns you love for small bags, placemats, scarves and other lovely woven items. You'll learn all the basics of weaving: from yarn selection to finishing your piece.

   Saturday, August 16 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
This class is for those weavers with 20" or 32" rigid heddle looms and those who have already completed a Knitter's Loom class. Learn how to use your larger loom to create your own unique jacket. Class will help you measure for your jacket and complete your weaving plan.

Try your hand at weaving on a larger scale with one of our floor-style rigid heddle looms. Learn the basics and enjoy creating larger woven fabrics for a variety of uses.
Jewelry
Jewelry 101
   Call for schedule
Learn the basics of beading and jewelry-making — or improve your skills under the watchful eye of our professional jewelry-maker. All skill levels welcome in this workshop.

Fiber Art Necklace
No knitting skills required. With a fiber kit and beads you'll create a unique piece of wearable art.

Beading for Summer
   Wednesday, August 13 from 10:00am to noon
Join Linda to design a summer piece of jewelry.

Bead Links and Bead Stringing
   Saturday, August 16 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
In this class you will learn basic placement of beads for stringing, how to design your necklace or bracelet, and gauge the proper length and clasp type. Basic wire wrapping and linking beads with wire will also be covered.

Knitted Wire Bracelets
   Call for schedule
Learn to knit a wire and bead bracelet. Bring your own crochet hooks and US size 5, 6, or 7 double point needles. Class and materials: $30.00

I-cord jewelry
   Call for schedule
Take cord-making to a new level and learn basic techniques for constructing necklaces and braclets. Completed examples will be available for inspiration for all levels of knitters.
NO special SKILLS REQUIRED!
KUMIHIMO
   Call for schedule
No knitting or needle skills required. Learn the Japanese art of braiding using cards and cord.

NEEDLE FELTING
   Call for schedule
No knitting skills required. Use this technique to create embellishments for felted items, or to craft an original piece of art from several types of wool.

HAND FELTING
   Call for schedule
No knitting skills required -- and class size is limited to two students. Wet-felt a wool batt (a layer of unspun wool) into a handbag, a button, and a handle. A little bit of post-lesson sewing is needed for side seams. Class fee for this 2 & 1/2 hour lesson is $30.00 and includes materials.

WEAVING ON THE TRIANGLE LOOM
   Call for schedule
No knitting skills required. Hand-weave a small sample shawl on a triangle loom. Learn to start your weaving, correct mistakes, cast off, and create fringe. These 2 & 1/2 hour classes are $20.00. Once you're hooked, you'll want to rent or purchase your own triangle loom from The Yarn Shop by Rainy Day Creations.

NEEDLE WEAVING
   Call for schedule
Create a shawl or scarf with beautiful designer yarns -- and no knitting needles!! No knitting is required for this class, which uses a mesh form through which you weave your choice of colors, textures and designs.

MITERED SQUARES
Advanced beginner and intermediate knitters will enjoy the challenge of creating a lovely, colorful piece with this square-linking technique. Choose a scarf, shawl, or afghan -- or try the crayon box jacket, which makes a great project.

NORO MINI KNITS SWEATER
An easy cropped raglan sweater in Taiyo, a new cotton blend from Noro. Great way to improve skills including: seaming, reading a pattern, increasing and decreasing, while creating a great summer knit. See the sample on display at the shop.

BEADED SCARF
Combine knitting and beads to create a one-of-a-kind accessory.

SIDE-TO-SIDE SWEATER
Using this innovative technique for the advanced beginner, learn to read your pattern so that you can knit side to side or cuff to cuff.

DOG SWEATER
Advanced beginners and up can choose a pattern for a sweater for woman's best friend. Be sure and come with measurements of your dog to insure a good fit.

FELTED KNITS
Once you know the beginner basics, try this class -- and you'll get hooked on felting. Choose from a wide range of patterns, including handbags, hats, mittens, cat beds, rugs, and more.

TRIANGLE SHAWL
A beginner class that ends with a lovely, stylish garment. Choose one of three patterns, learn increasing/decreasing, and finish with fringe.
