The Yarn Shop offers a range of classes and private lessons for fiber artists of virtually every skill level. Just getting started or need some special help? Try one of our Workshop classes. Looking for something new? Consider a project class. Or try out a skill before you invest in equipment. Most two-hour classes are $15 per person. Want a class you don't see listed? We're glad to schedule a private lesson at $15 per half-hour. Call us at 704-889-1308 or drop us a line for more info or to reserve your space in the date of your choice.

The Basics

Knitting Workshops
Wednesdays from 10a-noon
Thursdays from 7-9pm
Saturdays from 2-4pm

These inclusive sessions offer an answer for every question. Want to learn to knit? Need help with a new technique? Having trouble with a garment you have underway? At the Workshop, you'll enjoy personal assistance in a small group setting that includes people of every skill level.

Novice & new knitters can learn...
• casting on that first row
• making more rows with the knit stitch
• binding off

Advanced beginners can learn...
• the purl stitch - the other essential knitting stitch
• determining gauge for a just-right fit
• easy techniques to enhance your knitting repertoire

• garment-making basics like picking up stitches, increasing/decreasing,
pattern-reading and knitting abbreviations

Intermediate
Now-intermediate knitters can learn more complicated skills, including cables, intarsia, entrelac, and Fair Isle.


Crochet Workshops
Tuesdays from 5-7pm
Thursdays from 10-noon
Learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read crochet patterns. Everyone from beginners to the experienced crocheters are welcome — we tailor our instructions to your individual needs.



Tatting Workshops
Fourth Sunday from 1-3pm
Join Hegla and expand your fiber art skills with tatting. You will learn how to combine a series of loops and knots to craft your own unique lace pieces and explore all of the practical applications of tatting.

Some knitters love sock knitting for its mobility; others love it for its meditative quality. And friends and family love it for the handknitted gifts they can wear. In this class for advanced beginners, knitters choose to learn using either double pointed needles, two circular needles, or one long circular. Instructor: Hattie $30

First Sweater
Tuesday, July 7 from 5pm to 7pm
Try your hand at garment knitting with this easy top down raglan sweater that requires almost no seaming. Instructor: Hattie $15

Felted Bag
Tuesday, July 14 from 5pm to 7pm
Saturday, July 25 from 10am to noon
A great beginner project. Learn how to knit in the round, increase, decrease, create I-cord, and pick up stitches as well as how to felt.

Knit One Below

Discover how a simple knitting direction, k1b, can enable you to create a double-sided fabric combining color and/or texture in a flattering vertical pattern.

2 SOCKS ON 2 CIRCULARS
Call for schedule
If you suffer from second sock syndrome, this is the class for you. Never have only one sock again and impress your friends when you master knitting both socks at once with two circular needles. $30

mobius...to infinity and beyond...

A mobius is a strip with only one side and one boundary. What's that you ask? Using Cat Bordhi's mobius cast-on you will create an object with endless possibilities. Take your talent beyond and add this to your techniques mastered. Instructor: Pat $15

MITERED SQUARES

A great introduction to modular knitting and easy enough for the beginning knitter. Learn how to use simple decreases to create squares that are joined with no sewing required. Great technique for self-striping yarns with long color repeats. $15

Demystify this simple knitting technique and learn the basic steps for creating beautiful garments and accessories with cable stitches. Discover just how simple cable knitting can be while crafting a classic, reversible scarf. $15

knitted pillow top
Call for schedule
Complement your home decor and expand your knitting horizons by crafting your own accent pillow. This class will teach you how to determine your gauge along with a stitch multiple and apply that to your choice of four patterns. Bring your own pillow form and a range of needle sizes to match your yarn. $15

Choose from 15 designs knitted on a large needle to produce a quick project. Entertaining enough for new knitters and more experienced knitters alike, this class on requires basic knowledge of knit, purl, and cast-on techniques. $15 plus materials

la mer scarf/tunisian crochet
Call for schedule
Also called afghan crochet, this technique utilizes a smooth crochet hook with a cable to create a unique fabric with many applications. The class will cover lace Tunisian crochet stitches found in the La Mer Scarf from the Summer 2008 issue of Interweave Crochet. Instructor: Hattie $15 plus materials

Welcome to the Entrelac Zone
Saturday, June 27 from 10am to noon
Saturday, July 25 from 10am to noon
A journey into a wondrous land, whose boundaries are that of the imagination, where you will learn the technique of entrelac to create a textured diamond pattern which resembles basket woven strips of knitted fabric. Expand your stitch palate with SSK, M1 and picking up stitches. Come to learn the technique or start a project. Once you start, you will be entranced. Instructor: Pat $15
Spinning & Weaving
Spinning 101
   Saturday, July 11 from 10am to noon
A craft as old as humankind, spinning is well-loved for its creative and its meditative qualities. Learn about the history of spinning, natural fibers, and the operation of a spinning wheel. All participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at our Ashford Traveller wheel. Instructor: Linda $25

Drop Spindle
   Saturday, June 27 from 10am to noon
   Saturday, July 25 from 10am to noon
Not ready for a spinning wheel or have a wheel and want to try something more portable? Learn how to use a drop spindle to craft your own yarn. Instructor: Linda $15

Wool Preparation Class
   Saturday, June 27 from 2pm to 4pm
Experience how raw, unwashed wool is cleaned, carded and prepared for spinning. Instructor: Linda $25(includes wool)

knitters loom
   Friday, June 26 from 10am to noon
   Thursday, July 23 from 7pm to 9pm
No knitting skills required! This great little lap loom offers an alternative way to use all those great yarns you love for small bags, placemats, scarves and other lovely woven items. You'll learn all the basics of weaving: from yarn selection to finishing your piece. Instructor: Pat $15 (other fees may apply if renting a loom)

advanced knitters loom - Show Me More
   Call for schedule
What else can I do? You've mastered a simple weave, now learn hemstitching and double (Italian) hemstitching. Also, weaver manipulated lace weaves including leno lace, Brooks bouquet, Danish medallion, and Spanish lace will be covered. this class is for students who already have a loom and there will be homework to complete before class. Bring you pre-warped rigid heddle loom and spend the day exploring many advanced techniques to take your weaving to the next level. Class includes book and lunch. Call us to reserve your spot and get information about homework and materials. Instructor: Pat $80

Branching Beads
   Thursday, July 9 from 7pm to 9pm
Add to your beading repertoire and learn the art of making branches of beads while stringing a necklace or bracelet. $15



Knitted Wire Bracelets
   Call for schedule
Learn to knit a wire and bead bracelet. Bring your own crochet hooks and US size 5, 6, or 7 double point needles. Class and materials: $30.00

I-cord jewelry
   Call for schedule
Take cord-making to a new level and learn basic techniques for constructing necklaces and braclets. Completed examples will be available for inspiration for all levels of knitters.
NO special SKILLS REQUIRED!
KUMIHIMO
   Call for schedule
No knitting or needle skills required. Learn the Japanese art of braiding using cards and cord. $15

Fiber Art Necklace
   Tuesday, June 30 from 2pm to 4pm
   Tuesday, July 28 from 2pm to 4pm
Craft a beautiful necklace with a combination of fiber, texture, and beads. No knitting or crochet skills required.

NEEDLE FELTING
   Call for schedule
No knitting skills required. Use this technique to create embellishments for felted items, or to craft an original piece of art from several types of wool.

HAND FELTING
   Call for schedule
No knitting skills required -- and class size is limited to two students. Wet-felt a wool batt (a layer of unspun wool) into a handbag, a button, and a handle. A little bit of post-lesson sewing is needed for side seams. Class fee for this 2 & 1/2 hour lesson is $30.00 and includes materials.

SIDE-TO-SIDE SWEATER
Using this innovative technique for the advanced beginner, learn to read your pattern so that you can knit side to side or cuff to cuff.

DOG SWEATER
Advanced beginners and up can choose a pattern for a sweater for woman's best friend. Be sure and come with measurements of your dog to insure a good fit.

FELTED KNITS
Once you know the beginner basics, try this class -- and you'll get hooked on felting. Choose from a wide range of patterns, including handbags, hats, mittens, cat beds, rugs, and more.

TRIANGLE SHAWL
A beginner class that ends with a lovely, stylish garment. Choose one of three patterns, learn increasing/decreasing, and finish with fringe.
