The Yarn Shop offers a range of classes and private lessons for fiber artists of virtually every skill level. Just getting started or need some special help? Try one of our Workshop classes. Looking for something new? Consider a project class. Or try out a skill before you invest in equipment. Most two-hour classes are $15 per person. Want a class you don't see listed? We're glad to schedule a private lesson at $15 per half-hour. Call us at 704-889-1308 or drop us a line for more info or to reserve your space in the date of your choice.

The Basics

Knitting Workshops
Wednesdays from 10am -12 noon
Thursdays from 7-9 pm (except for 3/18)
Fridays from 10am - 12 noon
Saturdays from 2-4 pm

These inclusive sessions offer an answer for every question. Want to learn to knit? Need help with a new technique? Having trouble with a garment you have underway? At the Workshop, you'll enjoy personal assistance in a small group setting that includes people of every skill level.

Novice & new knitters can learn...

Learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read crochet patterns. Everyone from beginners to the experienced crocheters are welcome — we tailor our instructions to your individual needs.



Tatting Workshops
Sunday, March 28 from 1-3 pm
Join Hegla and expand your fiber art skills with tatting. You will learn how to combine a series of loops and knots to craft your own unique lace pieces and explore all of the practical applications of tatting.

Quick Knit Vest

Easy to knit, this vest is a great piece for the advanced beginner. It uses size 11 needles and a simple textured stitch pattern. Great for a first garment!

Spinning & Weaving
Spinning 101
   Saturday, March 13 from 10 am to 12 noon
A craft as old as humankind, spinning is well-loved for its creative and its meditative qualities. Learn about the history of spinning, natural fibers, and the operation of a spinning wheel. All participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at our Ashford Traveller wheel. Instructor: Linda $25

Intermediate Spinning
   Friday, March 19 from 2-4 pm
Get the yarn you want - learn plying techniques and long draw spinning. Learn control to get consistent yarns. Instructor: Linda $25

Wool Preparation
Saturday, February 27 from 2-4 pm
   Friday, March 26 from 2-4 pm
Experience how raw, unwashed wool is cleaned, carded and prepared for spinning. Instructor: Linda $25 (includes materials)

Drop Spindling
   Friday, March 27 from 2-4 pm
Not ready for a spinning wheel, or have a wheel and want to try something more portable? Learn how to use a drop spindle to craft your own yarn.

No knitting skills required! This great little lap loom offers an alternative way to use all those great yarns you love for small bags, placemats, scarves and other lovely woven items. You'll learn all the basics of weaving: from yarn selection to finishing your piece. Instructor: Pat or Linda $15 (other fees may apply if renting a loom)

Jewelry with Genie

Come and learn the basic beading techniques - stringing, wire wrap, crimping. Also learn how to re-style some of your old jewelry. Instructor: Genie $15


Stringing Beads 101

Learn the art of jewelry crafting. This class focuses on the fundamental steps of bead stringing including information on project planning, crimping, stringing and wire work.

Tunisian Crochet Bracelet
   
Thursday, March 4 from 2-4 pm

Tunisian Crochet creates a smooth and beautiful bracelet. This bracelet is great for gifts for yourself or others. Class fee includes thread, beads, beading needle and class. Basic crochet skill recommended.

Beading on a Loom

Beading on a loom is a wonderful way to do beadwork. Learn how to warp a bead loom and weave a beautifulproject. Class fee includes practice looms and materials. Instructor: Linda $20

Seed Beads
   
Wednesday, March 31 from 2-4 pm

Learn to employ right angle weave and peyote stitch seed bead techniques.

KUMIHIMO
   Call for schedule
No knitting or needle skills required. Learn the Japanese art of braiding using cards and cord.

Fiber Art Necklace
   Call for schedule
Craft a beautiful necklace with a combination of fiber, texture, and beads. No knitting or crochet skills required.

HAND FELTING
   Call for schedule
No knitting skills required -- and class size is limited to two students. Wet-felt a wool batt (a layer of unspun wool) into a handbag, a button, and a handle. A little bit of post-lesson sewing is needed for side seams. Class fee for this 2 & 1/2 hour lesson is $30.00 and includes materials.

SIDE-TO-SIDE SWEATER
Using this innovative technique for the advanced beginner, learn to read your pattern so that you can knit side to side or cuff to cuff.

DOG SWEATER
Advanced beginners and up can choose a pattern for a sweater for woman's best friend. Be sure and come with measurements of your dog to insure a good fit.

FELTED KNITS
Once you know the beginner basics, try this class -- and you'll get hooked on felting. Choose from a wide range of patterns, including handbags, hats, mittens, cat beds, rugs, and more.

TRIANGLE SHAWL
A beginner class that ends with a lovely, stylish garment. Choose one of three patterns, learn increasing/decreasing, and finish with fringe.

FIRST SWEATER
Try your hand at garment knitting with this easy top down raglan sweater that requires almost no seaming.

KNIT ONE BELOW
Discover how a simple knitting direction, k1b, can enable you to create a double-sided fabric combining color and/or texture in a flattering vertical pattern.

KNITTED BEAD NECKLACE
In this class, knitters will craft their own jewelry by combining their love of beads and yarn to create a custom accessory.

MOBIUS...to infinity and beyond...
A mobius is a strip with only one side and one boundary. What's that you ask? Using Cat Bordhi's mobius cast-on you will create an object with endless possibilities. Take your talent beyond and add this to your techniques mastered.

MITERED SQUARES
A great introduction to modular knitting and easy enough for the beginning knitter. Learn how to use simple decreases to create squares that are joined with no sewing required. Great technique for self-striping yarns with long color repeats.

CABLE CLASS
Demystify this simple knitting technique and learn the basic steps for creating beautiful garments and accessories with cable stitches. Discover just how simple cable knitting can be while crafting a classic, reversible scarf.

KNITTED PILLOW TOP
Complement your home decor and expand your knitting horizons by crafting your own accent pillow. This class will teach you how to determine your gauge along with a stitch multiple and apply that to your choice of four patterns. Bring your own pillow form and a range of needle sizes to match your yarn.

KNITTED AFGHAN
Choose from 15 designs knitted on a large needle to produce a quick project. Entertaining enough for new knitters and more experienced knitters alike, this class on requires basic knowledge of knit, purl, and cast-on techniques.

TUNISIAN CROCHET
Also called afghan crochet, this technique utilizes a smooth crochet hook with a cable to create a unique fabric with many applications.

KNITTING WIRE CUFF BRACELETS
Learn to knit a wire and bead bracelet. Bring your own crochet hooks and US size 5, 6, or 7 double point needles.

BRANCHING BEADS
Add to your beading repertoire and learn the art of making branches of beads while stringing a necklace or bracelet.




I-CORD JEWELRY
Take cord-making to a new level and learn basic techniques for constructing necklaces and braclets. Completed examples will be available for inspiration for all levels of knitters.





Felted Bag
A great beginner project. Learn how to knit in the round, increase, decrease, create I-cord, and pick up stitches as well as how to felt.

Falling Leaves Scarf
Falling Leaves, for the adventurous beginner, is a Gloria Tracy Design and is a great way to use leftover and stash yarn. It is also a lot of fun to make! The motifs show-off multi-colors beautifully without blobs or stripes.




How to Correct Your Mistakes
This class will help you identify and correct common mistakes in knitting. Learn when to rip or not, how to "tink", repair dropped stitches, split stitches and more. If you have a mistake, bring it.


How to Read Knitting Patterns
Learn the language of patterns and what all those pesky abbreviations, commas, brackets and asterisks really mean.

Purling Alternatives
Hate to purl? Come learn a new technique that makes purling fun again! This is also an alternative method to fair isle for color stranding work. You can't miss this class!


Crochet Bangle Bracelet
   
Learn to crochet a tube and head each stitch to make a bangle bracelet. Basic Crochet skills required. Instructor: Susan $30 (includes materials)
**Come in for assistance with clasp when beading is complete.**

Easy Crochet Bracelet
Learn two techniques for making a beaded bracelet. Basic crochet skills are recommended. Instructor: Susan $25 plus materials

Kumihimo & Bead Bracelet
   
Learn the simple 8 strand braid, how to weave a loop clasp and how to incorporate beads into Kumihimo braiding. Class includes thread and # 6 seed beads, and button to finish clasp. Bring your own round Kumi plate or purchase one at the time of the class. Instructor: Susan Class Fee: $30.00.



Caring for your Wheel
   
Your wheel needs to be fed and pampered at least once a year. This is a forum to help you maintain your wheel for years of good spinning health!

Needle Felting of Solid Forms
Learn basic needle felting technicques to create a solid felted project

Entrelac
Learn the entrelac technicque to create a textured diamond patter which resembles basket woven strips of knitted fabric. Expand your stitch repertoire with SSK, M1, picking up stitches and how to knit and purl backwards.Instructor: Hattie $15

SOCKS
Some knitters love sock knitting for its mobility; others love it for its meditative quality. And friends and family love it for the handknitted gifts they can wear. In this class for advanced beginners, knitters choose to learn using either double pointed needles, two circular needles, or one long circular.


Undulating Waves Scarf
This class is a combination of lace knitting and bead knitting which makes for an interesting project. Learn the secrets of undulating waves, how to knit from a chart and various increases and decreases.***NOTE: Homework is to pre-string your sock weight yarn with 400 beads***

TUNISIAN CROCHET BAG
This felted bag incorporates the Tunisian crochet technique to mimic knitted entrelac.











advanced knitters loom - Show Me More
    What else can I do? You've mastered a simple weave, now learn hemstitching and double (Italian) hemstitching. Also, weaver manipulated lace weaves including leno lace, Brooks bouquet, Danish medallion, and Spanish lace will be covered. this class is for students who already have a loom and there will be homework to complete before class. Instructor: Pat $20

Weaver's Workshop "Thinking Outside the Shed"
    Can I use this yarn for warp? How many yards do I need> Oops. Can I repair a broken warp? Answers to these questions and the questions you bing, plus a special suprise awaits. Instructor: Pat $20

Advanced Weaving - Texture My Dear Weaver
    Bring your pre-warped rigid heddle loom and spend the day exploring many advanced techniques to take your weaving to the next level. Class includes book and lunch. Instructor: Pat $80


2 SOCKS - The Method of your Choice

If you suffer from second sock syndrome, this is the class for you! Never have only one sock again and impress your friends when you master knittiing both socks at once. Use either two circular needles or if you've tried Magic Loop with one sock and try using 2!
